Score 94/100 · Drink 2023-2040, Mark Squires, Dec 2021

The 2019 Tinto, the estate flagship, is a field blend from old vines (90+ years) aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak, the rest second use. It comes in at 13.9% alcohol. This adds depth, power and flavor to the Contraste Tinto while maintaining its relative understatement and gorgeous balance. This, though, is far more tightly wound and laser-like focused. It is very elegant in the mid-palate. There's plenty of pop on the finish, along with a bit of oak. It handles the new wood surprisingly well, despite a fair amount of it. This simply exudes class and finesse. It's a classic food wine with plenty of distinction and not a lot of exuberant fruit, but it is completely unevolved just now. Let's be a little conservative and let it prove its case, but this certainly looks like a big winner that can age well. It's worth leaning up a little just now. It should be looking fairly good around 2025, give or take.
