Candied orange peel and a liqueur-like concentration of green herbal essences greet the nose. Corresponding flavors are enhanced on the palate by an impression of vanilla cream that is part sapid and part textural. Quince preserves add to the sense of advanced ripeness, and the finish delivers luscious yet wafting persistence, while unexpectedly pulling fresh orange and Persian melon juiciness from somewhere, thereby helping ensure a desire to take the next sip. This was due for late 2019 bottling, and was raised entirely in cask, whereas the “regular” Auslesen in this collection saw only tank.

The purest fruit in the Garden of Eden must have smelt like this! Very aromatic and rich but scintillatingly transparent, this Gold Cap Auslese sings out mirabelle plums, fresh orchids, apricots, puffballs and persimmon. The palate is a complex, complete tapestry of flavor and texture; the combination of sweetness and acidity is simply sublime. Itâs all so seamless that you almost donât notice the innate minerality which suddenly bursts into life on the finish. So very long and delicious. Drink now or hold for decades.
