Tasting notes
The 2022 Casamatta is a fruit-forward and jovial wine, with a burst of black cherries and strawberries up front giving way to a cascade of baking spice and licorice. It’s soft and round with juicy acidity and crisp wild berry fruits. Violet inner florals resonate over a coating of subtle grippy tannins as this tapers off with medium length and a steely mineral sensation.

Sangiovese from the Vincigliata and Olmo vineyards in Fiesole at 420 m of elevation. Open and transparent, with very strong Sangiovese character. Good wine with real freshness. (JR)
The Bibi Graetz 2022 Casamatta Poderi di Fiesole is a baby Testamatta with new label artwork with each new vintage. Made with 100% Sangiovese, the wine offers pretty earthy notes, pressed flower, dried mint and iris. There are soft cherry and blueberry notes that cede to slate-like mineral notes. In fact, some of the fruit used here is declassified from the Testamatta program. This is an annual production of 20,000 to 30,000 bottles. Casamatta has come a long way since the last vintage I tasted (the 2015), with 400,000 bottles made back then.
About the producer

Based just outside Florence, Bibi Graetz is something of a maverick in the Tuscan wine scene. Working with old vineyards of indigenous grapes around Chianti, he produces intense wines classified as IGT Toscana; not fitting neatly in either the Super Tuscan or Chianti camp.
