Tasting notes
Full bottle 1,309 g. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec. Hand-picked. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged in small French oak barrels for 20 months. Minimal filtration. 3,998 bottles made. Certified organic (Ecocert). Tamarind and tobacco leaf, sour plum and redcurrant. Tannins that rustle, dry as leaves, past the fruit and then draw in, clenched as muscle, clamping to the iron and blood of the finish. There’s a lot here to love, but acidity is uncomfortably high and prominent on the finish. (TC)

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Oude Nektar comes from vines at the highest elevation on the estate and reputedly in the whole of Stellenbosch. Matured in 40% new French oak for 20 months, this takes a few swirls to cohere in the glass, with scents of blackberry, briar and a touch of wild mint. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy entry, fresh and lively, though there is just a nagging raw/herbaceous note that I find distracting on the finish.
