Juicy blackberries, pepper, underbrush, violets, and damp earth notes all shine in the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Roure, another medium-bodied, licorice-noted, vibrant wine from this team. It has ripe, integrated tannins, beautiful overall balance, and outstanding length. It's a Crozes that warrants 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep through 2042 if well stored. Drink 2029-2042. It is always a great tasting with Caroline Frey at Paul Jaboulet Aîné, and the wines showed beautifully across the board. The style here continues to emphasize purity and freshness, with a focus on vibrancy and precision. Starting with the 2021 vintage, the Hermitage La Chapelle wines were split off under the new Domaine de la Chapelle label and brand, marking a major step for the Frey family in differentiating the brands. Paul Jaboulet Aîné continues to produce a strong lineup across the Northern Rhône, including Condrieu Les Grands Amandiers, Crozes-Hermitage Thalabert and Domaine de Roure, Saint Joseph La Croix des Vignes, Côte Rôtie Les Pierrelles, and Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre. The newer Cornas Reynard cuvée, first made in 2020, continues to impress. Hermitage La Maison Bleue rounds out the range.

Crafted from Syrah, planted in the commune of Gervans, the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Roure was crafted from 2.4 hectares of Syrah planted at 400 meters in altitude and facing southwest. Revealing a fresh, dark bouquet of menthol, dark berries, licorice, gentian and spices. Moderately weighted and lively, it’s filled with energy, though the oaky frame lends a touch of austerity. The wine matured for 18 months in barrels, 20% of which were new.

A cool and very bright wine with the kind of mountain freshness the syrah grape is capable of in the Northern Rhone. Smoky and fragrant, with notes of verbena, rosemary, thyme and wildflowers. With aeration the wild blackberry aromas grow and grow. Very precisely contoured, with moderately dry tannins that interlock very neatly with the animating acidity. Excellent aging potential. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Cedar, black plum, black cherry and a flicker of licorice introduce the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Roure, a medium-bodied, defined red Crozes. Round and harmonious, it lands on the palate with sufficient flavor concentration and draws to a close with moderate length on the savory aftertaste.
