Tasting notes
The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru matured with 20% new oak and whole bunch, has a delightful bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and light cassis aromas. This is very controlled and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, fresh and quite saline with a focused and delineated finish. Excellent.

Offering up aromas of cherries, sweet berries, raw cocoa, spices and dried petals, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with a sumptuous core of fruit girdled by tangy acids, concluding with a gently wood-inflected finish.
Lots of clay here and he calls it the most ‘masculine’ of Volnay premiers crus. 20% new oak and 30% whole bunch because he has a large (0.8-ha), young (10- to 20-year-old) parcel. (Just four cf the usual 18 barrels because of the poor rootstocks – 161 – for heat; even worse in 2020. Need to replant and it’s a common problem in Burgundy.) Cask sample. Savoury and with real undertow. Though there’s a certain gentle quality to the fruit too, which was relatively concentrated. Nice pure style. (JR)
