Tasting notes
Racked from the fine lees only four days before I tasted the representative sample in June 2021, Pichler’s 2020 Ried Steinertal Grüner Veltliner opens coolish and crisp on the nose, with white and spicy Veltliner aromas and flinty notes. It is juicy, fresh and elegant on the palate, with salty, crystalline acidity and sustainable, juicy fruit. This is a coolish, piquant and steely Steinertal Veltliner that was fermented in stainless steel and aged in large old oak vats. 12.5% alcohol. To be bottled in July. 2020 is the first vintage Lucas Pichler doesn't use the predicates of the Vinea anymore since he has left the group earlier this year.

Maybe it's hard to imagine, but this has very ripe, green aromas that span the range from freshly chopped herbs to reine-claude plums ,plus some uplifting floral and thyme notes. At once sleek, juicy and very silky, with so much power for just 12.5% alcohol. Very impressive depth and delicate at the finish. Drink or hold.
