The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes is more intense and complex compared directly against the 2013 with crisp dark cherries, sous-bois , citrus and light oyster shell aromas. A few swirls of the glass reveals more nuance and terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, very well judged acidity, a little tight at the moment with a touch of undergrowth. Funnily enough, it reminds me of Taupenot-Merme - classic and conservative in style yet brimming with freshness and vitality. Give this Aux Combottes another two or three years in the cellar as I believe it will age with style. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Arlaud retrospective.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Arlaud's 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru aux Combottes has a simple bouquet compared to its peers, with black cherries, a touch of cassis and a splash of inkwell. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, good grip in the mouth, voluminous and powerful, yet it still cuts away a little swiftly toward the finish. More primal than its peers, it should be afforded another 2 or 3 years in bottle. Tasted September 2017.

Medium red. Alluring violet topnote to the aromas of blackberry, licorice, wild herbs, mint and dark chocolate. Supple, saline and suave on the palate, conveying excellent precision and cut to its flavors of redcurrant, spices and licorice. Finishes firmly tannic, vibrant, classically dry and long, with lovely fruit and real force.
