The 2017 Castera is a Cru Bourgeois that I never tasted out of barrel. It has a very perfumed nose of blackcurrant pastilles, strawberries and cassis, almost as if there was a little Gamay in the mix! Whilst not complex, it has an openness and generosity that I like. The palate is medium-bodied with a very sweet core of red fruit laced with black pepper and clove. Unlike the aromatics, I find the palate overpowering with too much volatility on the finish. Such a shame after that nose.

70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. Mid crimson. An attractive stony/dusty note and fine, lightly leafy cassis. A hint of fruit pastilles. Relatively light bodied yet elegant. Super-fine texture and lots of freshness. Approachable but no reason it won’t age well. Rather lovely. Complete, refined. (JH)
