Tasting notes
As usual, the 2007 Gigondas is a feral, wild beast of a wine that's hard to put a finger on. I've been buying this wine for more than a decade, and I nearly always think something is off with the first sip, yet come around to loving the wine by the end of the glass. Unquestionably, there’s some cellar funk influence, or cellar terroir if you will, going on here, and the 2007 sports a dense ruby/plum hue with just slight lightening at the rim. Giving up ample blackcurrants, green Provençal herbs, lavender, peppered game, and cedar, it offers a smorgasbord of spice and exotic notes reminiscent of a street market in the south of France. Full-bodied, earthy, flamboyant, and sweetly fruited on the palate, it has beautiful fruit, some firmer tannins, and a great finish. These tannins will need to be watched. so my recommendation is to open bottles, decant for an hour, count yourself lucky, and drink up.

There's no doubt about the greatness of this vintage and the 2007 Gigondas from the Faraud sisters is a flamboyant, straight up sexy wine that's loaded with notions of garrigue, incense, flowers, mint and peppery herbs. Sweetly fruited, beautifully concentrated, full-bodied and seamless, with the purity and freshness that's the hallmark of the vintage, drink this killer Gigondas anytime over the coming decade.
Opaque ruby. Wild, assertively perfumed aromas of black raspberry, blueberry and apricot, with a strong floral quality. Round and velvety in texture, offering sweet dark berry flavors and a strong note of apricot jam. Very rich as many of these '07s are, finishing with power, length and lingering sweetness. This has gained in richness and exotic character since last year and I wonder if some will find it too much. (Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset NY
Saturated ruby. Strikingly aromatic bouquet of red and dark berries, garrigue and incense, plus an exotic note of apricot. Sappy black raspberry and cassis flavors caress the palate, with smoky minerals providing verve. Utterly seamless wine, offering a superb balance of depth, power and finesse. Finishes with excellent juicy lift and clinging minerality. This Gigondas is at the top of my to-buy list this vintage.
