The golden-colored 2018 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese (Auction) is pure and flinty on the concentrated, precise and complex nose that makes me wonder why there is a "normal" Spätlese as well selected on such a small plot like the Doctor where this Thanisch holds 0.9 hectares. Piquant and fresh on the palate, this is a sweet yet tightly structured and concentrated Doctor with a long, piquant and irresistible crunchy slate finish that is so incredibly salty. Very promising. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Lots of pear tart and apple sorbet here, as well as dried nectarines and peaches. Sweet and full-bodied with muscular, stone and tropical fruit and some caramel and toffee on the finish. Plenty of concentration and interest here, but some more freshness could have worked wonders. Drink now.
