Tasting notes
The van Volxem 2012 Riesling Alte Reben is clear and fresh on the nose offering ripe white peach aromas along with delicate stony and limey features. Sourced from ancient vines in a wide range of sites this is a very delicate but also intense and juicy, full-bodied but crystalline and leaner type Riesling with a good structure and a racy acidity.

Cask sample. The full-on herbaceous nose of spontaneous fermentation takes on a medicinal character. This is the uncensored minerality version of ‘when slate met old vines’ and not for the squeamish followers of the traditional style. It will take a bit of time for all the raw elements of salt, grapefruit, quinine and brimstone to come together and even then there will still be fireworks, albeit of tasting ecstasy. A wine to win friends or make enemies. (MS)
