Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru shows the more immediate, lush qualities of the vintage in its open, expressive fruit. Sweet spices, licorice and smoke are some of the notes that develop in the glass. There is an attractive streak of salinity that runs through the wine, but ultimately the 1er Cru is more about 2009 fruit expression.

(this and the following wines were aged in 100% new oak): Good bright red. Very ripe aromas and flavors of cherry liqueur, wild herbs, anise and pepper, with nicely integrated oak. Ripe, lush, creamy and fat with fruit; conveys a strong impression of sucrosite without any heaviness or loss of focus. The long finish features very fine tannins. A superb showing.

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is an explosive wine bursting with dark berries, spices and flowers. The expression of fruit is dark, round and seductive. The 1er Cru saw 100% new oak, but you would hardly know it by the wine's stunning balance. A creamy, textured finish rounds things out in style. The 1er Cru is made from parcels in Petite Chapelle, Cherbaudes, Bel Air and Champonnets, each of which is too small to bottle separately. Tasted from tank.
