The 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Gottesfuss Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs, based on vines that date back to the last years of the 19th century, nearly always represents the qualitative apex of any Van Volxem collection, but it has stiff competition this year. Almond and strongly pit-inflected white peach are garlanded in green herbs on the nose and the creamy, dense palate. The gripping finish combines concentration with surprising levity, and takes a somewhat austere turn in its evocation of stones and fruit pits. I suspect this is built for the long haul.

The 2020 Gottesfuss Alte Reben GG is deep, pure and complex on the nose that pairs perfectly ripe and healthy fruit with weathered slate aromas and a delicate spiciness. Juicy, refined and persistently salty on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, charming yet piquant and structured dry Riesling with noble elegance and persistent finesse. Another fabulous wine from the men grouped around winemaker Dominik Völk and mastermind Roman Niewodniczanski. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021.
One of the fruitier fragrances in the van Volxem range with aromas of citrus fruit, green fruit, but also fine herbal and spicy touches. Some of the van Volxem wines may be dark and broody, but this one shows a friendly and inviting character with zesty fruit, lively acidity and plenty of spice on the finish, even a hint of tingling ginger.
