The 2021 Red is based around 78% Syrah, 100% whole bunches and aged in larger oak vessels. This offers plenty of blackberry, boysenberry and crushed violet scents on the nose that do not hold back. Impressive delineation. The medium-bodied palate has gentle grip on the entry and a judicious touch of white pepper and clove, quite spicy on the finish. Great volume, if not quite as much persistence as Rall's other red cuvées. Still, it’s a superb Syrah-based blend.

Rall's ripest wine at 13%. 'It wants more ageing. It's bottled at the same time as everything else but released one year later.' It gets a bit more cap submerging than his other reds. Mostly Syrah with some Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. Succulent but actually more Pinot-like in terms of structure than anything else. Reminds me of new-wave Roussillon reds. Sandy, grainy tannins and fragrant fruit. Gorgeous rain-on-old-stone-wall minerality. But it's also floral and charming, bougainvillea and hibiscus, wild strawberries. Just so long and almost tenderly insistent. (TC)
Bursting with a bright, juicy frame, the 2021 Red Blend is fresh and ripe as it wafts with crunchy red fruits and mineral essence. Medium-bodied, there is a fantastic focus on the palate with a balanced structure, succulent tannins and bright acidity before offering a fine mineral tension. The wine concludes with a lingering, brilliant finish that begs me back for more. Bravo!

Working with fruit from the Swartland, Piekenierskloof, Darling and Stellenbosch, Donovan Rall is one of South Africa’s top winemaking talents. He created his own label in 2008, while working alongside Eben Sadie, and now consults on various projects as well as making his exception Rall wines.
