The Mazzei 2013 Concerto di Fonterutoli comes from a vintage that saw good rainfall and high temperatures in July and August that were especially challenging from an agronomic point of view. Although the resulting quality of grapes remained satisfying according to the Mazzei family, you do taste some astringency with a veiling of greener herbal notes. It offers a little more bite or crunch overall. However, I prefer the 2013 vintage over the softer and monotone 2011. This wine remains quite uplifted thanks to that tannin pinch and its tart fruit aromas.

A rich, opulent vintage, and you feel it in the body and mouthfeel of the wine, with its silky tannic structure, and expansion through the mid-palate. Still young, just getting going, with luscious depths, and plenty of life ahead. Expect tobacco, liqourice, graphite, raspberry puree, red plum, sour cherries, black olive. Totally delicious with a stretched-out smoky finish. 70% new oak barrels, harvest from October 9, Carlo Ferrini consulting winemaker. Owned by Marchesi Mazzei.
The 2013 Concerto, a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, is an addition to the range. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, spices, leather and licorice all flesh out in the glass. Drink this supple, fruit-forward wine over the next handful of years.
