Tasting notes
(made from fruit grown in Vinsobres, Cairanne and Rasteau): Deep ruby. Pungent, spice-accented aromas of black and blue fruits, olive and cola, with a sexy floral quality gaining strength with air. At once deep and lively, with powerful blueberry and bitter cherry flavors given spine and lift by smoky minerality. Closes with excellent clarity and length, leaving notes of violet and berry preserves behind. This wine always punches well above its weight--no surprise, as Jean-Louis Chave told me he gets fruit "only from great appellations."

Up there with my favorite vintage of this cuvee to date, the 2009 J.L. Chave Sélection Côtes du Rhône Mon Coeur is a screaming value that delivers perfumed red fruits, spice, and garrigue driven aromatics, a medium-bodied, rich mouth feel, and polished, ripe tannin on the finish. It builds in richness on the palate, and really shows class and length on the finish. Despite drinking beautifully now, it will continue to dish out pleasure over the coming decade.
About the producer

The Chaves have been growing grapes in the Northern Rhône since 1481. Jean-Louis Chave is the 16th generation to head up the family domaine, having taken over from his father in 1992.
