Score 94/100 · Drink 2022-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2022

The second vintage produced, the Mazzei 1993 Siepi is one of the big surprises in this historic retrospective. Tasted nearly 30 years after the harvest, the wine is bright and intact, with dark fruit and cured leather followed by an underpinning of saltiness or crushed mineral. Looking back at the original review published for this wine upon its commercial release, a brief drinking window of just four or five years was recommended. Not only has this 1993 vintage withstood the test of time, it has improved in sharpness and delineation. It's hard to know how much longer it will last, but for now, this blend of Merlot and Sangiovese is still going strong.

50% Merlot, 50% Sangiovese, from Tuscany. 1992 was the first difficult vintage. Brick rim and mid ruby core. Lots of brown on the rim. Dry end. Oily?? Middle weight?? Quite chewy. Desperately needs food. Really light and real chew. A little while to go still. (JR)
