The 2015 Boggina A (100% Sangiovese) offers more cherry, dried herbs, sandalwood and floral notes as well as a medium-bodied, seamless style on the palate. Coming from the original vineyard of the estate planted in 1958 and brought up all in amphora, it has light, fine tannin and should keep for 7-8 years.

Petrolo’s 2015 Boggina Anfora is a selection of Sangiovese that is fermented in terra cotta amphora. For my palate, the 2015 is a bit fleeting and lacking in depth, an impression that is reinforced by the wine’s washed out fruit and compact feel. I would prefer to drink the 2015 sooner rather than later, as there does not appear to be much structure to support aging here.

Sporting a slight name change, the 2015 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A is amphorae-aged Sangiovese. Previously, this wine was named BògginAnfora. The Petrolo winemaking team follows the same procedure in which grapes are sourced from a single vineyard that was planted in 1952. The wine remains in contact with the skins for a long six-month period inside traditional clay vessels. The wine opens to a lean garnet-dark ruby color. The bouquet is fragrant and bright with wild berry and cassis. The mouthfeel is lean and tight. Only 1,778 750-milliliter bottles were made as well as 50 magnums.
