The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes is a beauty, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, spices and grilled squab. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's supple and succulent, displaying considerable charm. Guillemot opted to vinify this cuvée with 40% whole clusters this year. Given the consistency of this cuvée and the reasonable tariff it commands, this is often one of the Côte d'Or's sleepers.

From Les Planchots de la Champagne, Les Vermots, Dessus les Gollardes. Vines 65 years old. They started putting VV on the label when the vines had reached 55 years. 30% stems. 30% new oak, the rest up to four years old, from a mix of coopers. Tank sample. Mid crimson. Tangy red fruits on the nose, raspberry, cranberry and zesty with just that little lift of stems adding a herbal but not green touch. Juicy, scented on the palate, paper-fine tannins. Long, scented finish with a hint of oak spice and a light but definite structure. Intensity without weight. Lightly chewy and would be perfect at the table but almost drinkable now. Savoury on the finish yet also starting to show a light floral note – peony or something like that. Really opens in the glass. Delicate and harmonious. Spice lingers on the finish. (JH)
