The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru carries a fair whack of new oak on the nose, but, unlike some of its peers, there is sufficient fruit to support and subsume that with time. At the moment, perhaps it's a bit generic, though I believe that will resolve. The palate is medium-bodied, with sappy black fruit laced with white pepper and sage. Showing impressive depth on the finish and the backbone you would seek in a Pommard, this is just the wrong time to broach it—patience required, but patience to be rewarded. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
