The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns is an especially warm, generous 2008. It shows lovely depth in its open, expressive fruit. The balance and sense of harmony are first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. Arnaud Mortet told me he is working with less extraction and lower levels of new oak than his father used to employ. Mortet did 5 days of cold maceration followed by 20 or so days of fermentation with very light extraction. The malos finished between June and November 2010, on the late side for the vintage. (malo nearly finished) Dark red with ruby highlights. Blackberry and bitter chocolate on the nose. Deep and lush but with lovely lift and grip, and a rocky pungency, to the flavors of blackberry and cocoa powder. Finishes broad and serious, with excellent length and lift. These vines always ripen early, like the Clos Vougeot, notes Mortet, which may explain the success of this cuvee in 2008.
