Fanti offers us a smooth and nicely integrated expression of Sangiovese. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino shows some ripeness and roundness that is characteristic of the vintage. Background notes include spice, tar, cola, leather and smoke. The mouthfeel is supple and rich with a good degree of textural richness in a vintage that produced much thinner wines overall.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby with orange tings. Balsamic nose that is still closed. Closed on the palate, too, and a little brooding and with lots of powdery tannins. Could do with a little more acidity to give it more zest, but overall pretty sound stuff. (WS)
