Wetter than previous years. High humidity, lots of early-morning dew, lots of disease pressure. They got phenolic ripeness at lower alcohol levels. Yields were 0.57 kg/vine. 11 months in 228-litre French oak barrels, 20% new. RS 2.9 g/l, pH 3.48, TA 5.7 g/l. 6,120 bottles produced. Meaty nose, like carpaccio. Black cardamom. It doesn't smell of fruit, but kerpow! Sassy, succulent, simmering with life. Laurel leaves. Lavender. Plum skins. This lovely wild fruit taste, and, again, a touch of windswept herbs – is this fynbos? Salty finish. I want to  bite this wine. (TC)

The 2020 Pinot Noir Vrede comes from Bokkeveld shale soils on vines planted in 2008, a native fermented and matured in 11 months in barrel with 25% new French oak and no racking. It has a lovely, transparent nose with brambly red fruit and subtle sous-bois aromas, very Old World in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy entry, lightly spiced with a touch of garrigues . Very harmonious and tender on the finish.
