Tasting notes
Even lighter (7% alcohol if the label is to be trusted) – but also less concentrated or distinctive – than its counterpart from the Hutte, von Kunow's 2009 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett smells of musky peony mingled with ripe peach and apple; comes to the palate spritzy and almost gossamer, and finishes with prominent sweetness, delicious if a bit slight. I would plan on enjoying it over the next 5-7 years. A dreadful health crisis from which he is thankfully now slowly recovering put proprietor Eberhard von Kunow entirely out of commission at critical junctures in the evolution of his 2009 crop, one result of which was a collection abbreviated at the upper end of Oechsle. Citric and with a hint of zesty tropical fruit, but there is also a minerally tangent. Kicks off very lively, but quite a sweet interpretation of Kabinett, just a tad short on acidity. (MS)
