Aged in Slavonian oak botti for an impressive 60 months, the organic 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is the big gun from vintner Alfio Cavallotto and his merry team in Castiglione Falletto. This wine is impossibly complex and deep with savory knots that are tied into fabric or rich dark fruit. The bouquet opens to blackberry, plum cola, dried herb, spice and a lingering floral note of lilac or violet. To my palate, the Riserva Vignolo has a little more vertical lift and minerality in this vintage. The Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is more about heft and texture, with dusty tannin. Production is 7,222 bottles.

Castiglione Falletto. Mid-to-deep ruby. Much more closed than the Vignolo Riserva of the same vintage. Truly embryonic and reluctant to open up. Suave, with crushed red fruit and with such fine tannins, like they were pounded in a mortar. Very long, focused and tightly knit finish. Impressive and needs more time in bottle. (WS)

Castiglione Falletto. Cask sample. Lustrous ruby. A nose exuding minerality, dark earth and shy raspberry. Suave and cool on the palate and still quite closed. Finely ground tannins make their presence felt but never dominate the fruit. Elegant and long. (WS)

Castiglione Falletto. Cask sample. Lustrous and just mid ruby with orange tinges. This is Vignolo but amplified, boasting the same concentration and minerally depth, but more refined and more restraint at the same time. Stunning, fine tannins, rich yet in perfect harmony with the supple, long and still-embryonic fruit. A stellar wine. (WS)
