The 2014 Château de Pez is slightly smudged on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, scorched earth, leather and sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, not the most complex Saint-Estèphe, just a bit foursquare towards the finish. The 2014 is a broad-shouldered wine that just misses some grace. Tasted sighted at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Enjoyable, black fruit, tannic grip, the fresh acidities mean this is not as supple as many in this line up but there is plenty of concentration to get stuck into here. Pencil lead and dark chocolate add appellation signature.

A classic name to know in the appellation, and it's one to look out for here, bright, sappy, sharp, fresh acidities but also plenty of fruit, great quality, cassis, tobacco, mandarin peel, has complexity and interest.

The 2014 de Pez shows just a touch of VA on the nose that detracts from its definition. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a solid and forceful Saint Estèphe that attenuates towards the finish and leaves you wanting more. A second bottle is similar: quite rigid and missing charm. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
