Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Sweetish fruit and sweet oak more noticeable. Pretty tough on the palate but a decent level of fruit in the middle. Chewy finish. (JH)

The 2013 Grand-Mayne has a respectable blackberry and cranberry leaf nose, a little more gumption than its peers with good definition if not show-stopping complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins cloaked in decent fruit, no sign of any greenness and a sense of roundness on the finish. One of the best Saint Emilion wines even if Jean-Antoine Nony's wine does not match its impressive showing from barrel.

Blackcurrant-cordial nose – much more concentrated than the average for 2013. There's an almost candied element to the fruit, though the palate has all the savoury snap of bordeaux on the finish, complemented by light oak spice. (RH)

Blackcurrant fruit but not a whole lot else. Quite firm and furry on the palate. Good fruit definition – no greenness. Basic, enjoyable, simple. (RH)
