The 2019 Lions de Batailley, built around 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a tightly wound bouquet, a little stubborn at first but opening with aeration and showing good definition. The palate is fresh, succulent and tensile, offering good mineralité and a touch of orange sorbet that brightens the finish. This is a delightful Deuxième Vin.

Knitted down and a little angular in its tannins, but as it opens it is dripping with Pauillac character, a delicious 2nd wine that will deliver pleasure without having to wait too long. I would give this two or three years, make sure you are carafing for a good few hours, but this is an excellent introduction to why Batailley is such a sure-fire Pauillac hit. Tasted twice.
