Dominated by brooding dark fruit and black olives, the 2015 Saint-Joseph Cuvee du Papy is a full-bodied, concentrated wine that seems a bit closed at the moment. Hints of allspice, clove and violets emerge with air, so decant it if drinking it in the near term, or just wait for bottle age to work its magic, as it seems to have all the ingredients to come out on the other side of its current funk.

Bright violet color. Spice- and mineral-accented dark fruit and floral scents are complemented by suggestions of incense, olive paste and exotic spices. Silky, concentrated and alluringly sweet, showing impressive energy and clarity to its intense, smoke-accented blackberry liqueur and violet pastille flavors. Finishes impressively long and sappy, with slow-mounting tannins coming in late and framing the wine's lush fruit.

In addition to the terrific Côte Rôties, the 2015 Saint Joseph Cuvée Du Papy is also more than noteworthy. Deep purple-colored, with perfumed notes of blue fruits, white pepper and violets, it’s layered, medium-bodied, ripe, and beautifully pure. I’d happily drink bottles over the coming decade or so.

Inky ruby. Sexy, mineral-accented aromas of dark fruit preserves, potpourri and spicecake, backed by deeper olive and licorice nuances. Smooth and broad on the palate, offering plush blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of candied violet. Tightens up and becomes more lively with aeration. Finishes sweet and quite long, showing impressive clarity and well-knit tannins.
