The 2017 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is showing just a little SO2 on the nose, although it clarifies with aeration, revealing some lovely flint and petrichor aromas. The palate is well defined with a mineral core and plenty of citrus fruit, plus there is razor-sharp acidity in situ . Brimming with energy, this has a Puligny-inspired finish of superb length. This is impressive and I suspect it will improve with aeration. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Harvested 5 September 2017 and undergoes malolactic fermentation. Aged for 18 months in 228-litre barriques (20% new). Bottled in spring 2019. TA 5.81 g/l, total SO2 105 mg/l, free SO2 14 mg/l. Made from vines of 80 years old and over. Fun and delicate with a good savoury quality and some real depth – even if it’s a silly price. But there is lift too. A fine, charming wine for a special occasion? It may even become more subtle. (JR)
The king of the cellar chez Coche this year is the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes, a beautiful wine that unfurls in the glass with scents of white peach, oatmeal, spring flowers and subtle spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and satiny, with a deep, concentrated core, lovely purity and a bright, precise finish. This is a classic in the making that will reward cellaring.
