The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts is showing nicely in bottle, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus oil, oatmeal, orange blossom, pear and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with an elegantly textural attack, a delicate core of fruit, and racy balancing acids.

In tank since just before the 2018 harvest and will be bottled in March or April. The parcel is 0.22 ha (0.54 acre). Next to Meursault Charmes, with lightish soil, not a lot of clay. Stony and plenty of sand. Sunny too and lower slope; doesn’t usually lack water. Very different on the nose from the Ente Meursaults, more spicy, savoury, mineral. Yet fragrant thanks to his early harvesting (late August). Much broader on the palate than I expected but pulls in tight on the finish thanks to the bright, pure acidity. Long, saline, mineral finish. So mouth-watering. Tight on the finish and long. (JH)
