Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Boillot's 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru les Combettes has a very expressive bouquet with impressive mineralité—you feel as if someone has crunched some limestone into powder and sprinkled it into the glass! The palate is very well balanced and perhaps richer than the aromatics suggest. There is a smear of clear honey on the entry and underneath is light tropical fruit including pineapple and a touch of passion fruit. It is almost as if on the final third of this wine it decided to aim for commercial appeal, but that does not detract from a delectable Puligny-Montrachet.

Bright light yellow. Ripe peach and lime aromas are complicated by clove and menthol. Broad and dry in the mouth; less fruity today than the Champ-Canet but this wine shows more force and structure. A touch of finishing austerity suggests that this 2014 will need patience.
Very pale, clear straw. Light but promising nose. Very crystalline and convincing. Lovely fruit and then a chalky finish. Some passion-fruit hint (but nothing as crass as obvious tropical fruit flavours). Very long and, like his other wines, ‘12.5-13.5%’ according to the label! Very good indeed. (JR)
