Tasting notes
Glowing ruby. Sleek, well-behaved nose. A very dense wine with lots of tannin. Extremely youthful and uncompromising when tasted without food but so sweet when tasted with braised ox cheeks. Arguably the most mainstream of this vertical tasting of Breg 2003 to 2010. Very well balanced. (JR)

Dark, impenetrable ruby. Deep, savoury damson with notes of cranberry on the nose. Exotic, savoury spice, old leather and mace. Wet gravel. Deep, layered palate of fruit lifted by almost lush acidity. The layers and layers of powdery, persistent tannins are like a track the fruit rolls along on. Laurel, damson and cherry on the finish, but savoury, rather than fruity. Great precision. (WS)
Breg on back label only. Dry vintage so no botrytis. Even deeper copper gold than the Breg 2010. Less apricot and more bitter orange. Seems drier and more mineral, more finely tannic, a little more austere than the 2010. Smoky and less sweet smelling. More upright and precise and a little less open and welcoming. A little more reserved and severe but super-elegant. Smoky tea finish. (JH)
Showing a pretty copper hue, the 2007 Bianco Breg is a tightly composed white (eh, "orange" wine) with a shapely, delineated personality. The bouquet in 2007 is especially sharp and concise with candied orange peel, butter almond, toasted pine nut, caramel and butterscotch. Pretty herbal notes and a dash of exotic spice are also woven within. This is a full-bodied white that can drink like a red thanks to its important texture and those fine tannins.
About the producer

Along with the likes of Radikon, Joško Gravner – whose vines straddle the Italian-Slovenian border – is a leading light of the natural-wine movement. His skin-contact Ribolla Gialla has inspired many imitators, while the rare Pignolo is prized by those in the know.
