The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino from Capanna opens with expressive high-toned aromas of flowers and spices. Medium in body, it offers an attractive up-front quality in its red cherry fruit and soft tannins, yet falls a bit short on the mid-palate. It should be a good relatively early-drinking wine in this vintage. Anticipated maturity
Full red. Musky aromas of marzipan and dried rose, with a suggestion of more exotic flowers. Then fairly intense but a bit hard-edged on the palate, in need of more sweetness and pliancy. Finishes with firm tannins and a bit of leathery rusticity.
Dark crimson. Healthy-looking. Light intensity of aroma but pure, rich, leaf mould aromas with some hint of walnuts. Very flattering mouthful of ripe fruit without any specious sweetness and then a hit of great neat dry tannins. A lovely whole that by no means tastes obviously alcoholic (although it is 14.5 per cent) but seems to have the constitution for a classic long life. Not An obvious blockbuster but great balance. (JR)
