Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Javillier's 2014 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, which came from magnum, has a vivid orange blossom, sherbet and lemongrass-tinged bouquet once allowed to open over 10 to 15 minutes. The palate is well balanced with a lime-tinged entry, simple but saline with a crisp, nicely detailed finish and a dash of white pepper that lingers on the aftertaste. I strongly suspect that this will deserve a higher score with bottle age.

(aged entirely in once-used barrels): Pale, bright yellow. Pungent aromas of lemon, pear and stone reminded me a bit of Riesling. Enters the mouth with a captivating restrained sweetness, then refined and energetic in the mid-palate, conveying outstanding intensity and a light touch to its flavors of grapefruit pith, lemon, lime, pear, white pepper, cardamom and bay leaf. A highly nuanced, youthful Corton-Charlemagne with terrific material--and a big success for this cuvée .

Lovers of pungency will not immediately warm to this, which is subtle but complex – mealy notes of oak combine with fresh pear and a light note of oak spice, as well as a limey freshness. Firm and deep on the palate. Not super-intense but full in the mouth and a gentle, long finish. (JH)
