Wonderfully autumnal in its earthy dampness on the nose. Plenty of structure on the palate, and perhaps the fleshiness doesn't quite match. There's lots of scaffolding but the core is a little hollow. Even so, the balance is surprisingly drinkable – although it needs food, of course. (RH)

Fenocchio's Barolo Villero is quite sensual and inviting in 2015, which is probably a reflection of the year, as wines from this Castiglione Falletto site tend to be quite reticent, especially when young. Spice, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and pine grow with time in the glass. The Villero is another impressive, showy wine in this lineup.
Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Cool, leafy nose with hints of tobacco leaf. Already a little bit of development going on and this is not hugely concentrated on the nose. Minerally, balsamic fruit while the powdery tannins and brisk acidity become more prominent on the finish. A little austere, but long as well – in a difficult phase right now. (WS)
Aromas of flowers and cedar with plums and beeswax. Full-bodied, chewy and very structured. Very linear and tight. Needs three or four years to come together. Try in 2023.
