The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet, rose petals and violets infusing the dark cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannin and fine acidity. Quite dense and persistent, leading to a sumptuous finish that reminds me of a 2009. Superb.

No stems. Late malo – March compared with the others in December. Racked in September, unusually for this vintage. Barrel sample. Ripe vanilla-laced black fruit. Deep and dark-fruited on the palate with a light smoky/charry note. Rich and deep. Firm but rounded texture. Generous in those pure dark-fruit flavours with intensity but no excess weight or unwanted sweetness. (JH)
