The 2016 Barolo Riserva Annunziata is one of the better wines Lorenzo Accomasso has released in recent years, maybe the best ever. There is still plenty of rusticity, but the harsh edges that once marked these wines appear to be a thing of the past. I still remember tasting vintages like 1996 and 1997 early on—those were undrinkable on release. The 2016 is far from that. As always, there is a slightly oxidative quality to the wine. Sweet dark cherry, red plum, spice and blood orange all meld together with aeration. Silky, soft tannins wrap it all together.
