Deep garnet in color with a touch of purple, the 2005 The Armagh Shiraz presents enticing smoked meat, black currant preserves and dried mulberries on the nose complemented by notes of charcoal, mocha, nuts and spices making it overall a little funky. Medium to full-bodied with rich, savory fruit concentration, it is framed by medium to firm, grainy tannins that lend a taut and muscular character to the long finish. Inky ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cherry pie, smoked meat and incense. Lush and creamy on the palate, which repeats the black and blue fruit qualities and gains tannic structure with air. For a wine of this size, there's excellent energy and focus. Seems never to let up, eventually finishing on sexy notes of black and blue fruit liqueur and sweet tobacco.
The 2005 Shiraz The Armagh is a finer expression, offering good power and delicacy with berry and dark cherry tones that are a little shy against a backdrop of sweet oak. Fresh and vibrant with jubey/fruit pastille flavors, it lacks the characteristic weight and impact of the best vintages.
