Score 93/100 · Drink 2023-2040, Kristaps Karklins, Wine Advocate, Aug 2023
Based on the 2020 vintage and complemented with 50% reserve wines from a perpetual reserve spanning 2011–2019, Gerbais’s NV Extra-Brut Champ Viole is sourced from a south-facing mid-slope parcel of 50-year-old Chardonnay vines. The bouquet reveals aromas of pear, brioche, lime and white flowers, mingling with grapefruit zest. Medium- to full-bodied and fleshy, it carries a rich, enveloping core of fruit enlivened by vibrant acidity, concluding with a long, enveloping finish. Disgorged in October 2024 with two grams per liter dosage, the depth of reserves tempers the youthful character of the 2020 base vintage.
