The 1974 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Aromatically beguiling and wonderfully deep, the 1974 possesses remarkable depth. Sweet pipe tobacco, sage, incense and crushed leaves lead into a core of deep fruit. This is a terrific showing.

Rustic, bright, crisp, earthy, leafy and spicy red fruits are accompanied by tobacco nuances. The wine retains density, lift and length, as well as complexity, finishing with sharp, sweet and tart red fruits. 94 Points

Mint, sage, tobacco and underbrush add complexity to the 1974, another dark, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon from Mayacamas. The aromatics are a bit more forward than the palate, with slightly oxidative notes that become more prominent over time. There is plenty of depth in the glass, though, so I can see the 1974 remaining at a plateau of maturity for some time. My preference would be to drink any remaining bottles sooner rather than later. Firm, coarse tannins would seem to place 1974 among the more rustic vintages here, although I have had much better bottles than this. Readers should consult the Vinous database for more representative examples.

A deeply colored wine, the 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon exudes power and exceptional overall balance. It, too, has aged beautifully and shows no signs of fading. Tonight the 1974 is closest to the 1971 in terms of its structure and overall personality.
