Tasting notes
The superb, complex and elegant 2020 Tabuerniga comes from a challenging year, as the vineyard was hit with hail. It fermented in open-top, 3,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudres for 14 to 16 months. The Tabuérniga terraces were the first to be harvested in 2020, from the sixth of October, and still the wine has a moderate 14% alcohol. It's elegant, expressive, clean, focused and balanced, combining power and elegance, with fine tannins and a long finish. 3,960 bottles were filled in April 2022. They have six hectares here, and they only produce this limited number of bottles.

In Rioja, there are places of exceptional character, such as those nestled within the Sierra del Toloño, particularly in the humid area of Salinillas de Buradón. The 2020 Tabuérniga epitomizes this uniqueness, crafted from Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha sourced from an old vineyard recovered by Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza. Aged in French foudres , it displays a garnet hue. Its balsamic nose exudes pine resin and forest-like aromas, intertwined with notes of plums, elderberries and black cherries. On the palate, it is dry, delicate and pleasantly plush, with fine-grained tannins and a light, airy texture that dances on the tongue. It culminates in a lingering finish of aniseed and licorice. This nimble Rioja radiates with energy and nuanced complexity, reflecting its extraordinary terroir.
About the producer

In 1994, Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza made their first wine together. This was the beginning of Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez, their joint project that looks to uncover the “real” Spain, working with old vineyards and indigenous varieties to recover the nation’s vinous heritage.
