Tasting notes
Youthful and oxidative at first sniff, with aromas of red fruit, bright red cherries, ripe plums, cassis, dark chocolate and leather. Itâs less complex and dark than usual. Full-bodied, it shows firm, velvety tannins and crisp if not zesty acidity. Itâs structured, vibrant and savory, with a tingling palate and a long finish full of Mediterranean herbs. Drink or hold.

The 2004 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco shows depth and complexity with dried berry flavors of raspberry and cherry followed by spice, leather and cured meat. The wine's composition includes 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese aged in oak for 18 months. I did notice an extra touch of oxidation that makes the wine's evolution feel further along than it really is. The mouthfeel is delicate and silky. If you have a bottle of this wine in your cellar, I suggest you drink it within the next few years.
The 2004 Grattamacco (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15 %Sangiovese) is perhaps a shade more understated and delicate than L'Alberello but equally fine. It too is a fresh, vibrant wine, outstanding for its persistence and polished tannins. The Sangiovese component needs time to develop the ful breadth of its aromatic expression which should help the wine fill out in another few years. Grattamacco spent 18 months in French oak.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. This is a gorgeous set of wines from one of Bolgheri's historic estates. Importer: Bedford International, Larchmont, NY; tel. (914) 833-2725
About the producer

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
