Serralunga d’Alba, from the single vineyard Baudana. Some years ago Vajra acquired the Luigi Baudana estate, but out of respect of the former owner decided to keep his name on the bottle. How courteous is that! Mid crimson. Much spicier and a little more direct and on the nose than the Viole. Real depth of fruit and concentration. Powerfully tannic, but builds a real unity with the fruit. Real Serralunga power with the Vajra elegance. (WS)

Good dark red. Violet, flint, chocolate and licorice on the nose, plus suggestions of superripe fruits. Then concentrated and a bit youthfully unforthcoming, with the strong flinty mineral element accentuated by insidious acidity. Best today on the echoing finish, which boasts suave, building tannins and lovely mineral lift. Give this one at least a few years in the cellar.

Plum, iron, graphite, smoke, tar and licorice notes flesh out in the 2009 Barolo Baudana. A wine of volume, depth and texture, the 2009 is quite dark and brooding. At the same time, though, the vintage has softened some of the contours, making the Baudana a wine that can be enjoyed relatively early. Layers of dark fruit and firm Serralunga tannins go at it pound for pound in this intense, masculine Barolo.

Commune of Serralunga. Very deep ruby. Oxidised and dead on the nose and what looks like loads of oak. Bad cask sample? (WS)
