Score 93/100 · Drink 2006-2016, Daniel Thomases, Wine Advocate, Apr 2006

The 2001 La Gioia is a joyous example of Sangiovese at its very best, powerful on the nose with sizeable and weighty notes of rich berry fruit, violets, and incense, dense and elegant on the palate with ripe and chocolatey berry fruit, superb focus, and a perfect fusion of the fruit and the oak. Drink: 2006-2016. Importer: A Christopher Cannan Selection, various American importers including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300 and Diamond Wine Merchants, Oakland, CA; tel. 100% Sangiovese. 60% new oak. 14.22% alcohol [How’s that for precision?] Mid crimson. Vegy autumnal. Lots of oak and sweetness. Not sure about this – too rich and ‘international’? Very hard work on the finish. (JR)
