Tasting notes
The 2020 Riesling Kanzemer Altenberg Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs leads with lavender, iris, orange blossom, white peach and lime scents that soar from the glass. The feel is seductively silken, and the mouth fills with luscious pit fruit, animatingly bright citrus, wafting floral perfume, and the sort of mouthwatering animal, mineral and herbal savor akin to raw oyster innards that was also present in this collection’s Scharzhofberger Grosses Gewächs. The vibrant, invigorating finish is bell-clear and focused, while not forgetting Riesling’s fundamental duty to refresh.

The 2020 Altenberg Alte Reben GG is clear, bright, fresh and precise on the nose, with concentrated and flinty fruit aromas and notes of broken slate. Silky, crystalline and juicy on the palate, this is a very intense but filigreed and highly finessed Altenberg with a long and aromatic, salivating and highly stimulating finish. A gorgeous Altenberg again that reveals outstanding finesse. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021.
A nose with presence but no overt fruit, some ripe peach but mineral power looming in the background. On the palate a rich texture reflects plenty of extract, the fruit is fleshy rather than sweet, minerality almost smooth and only getting a little more gravelly towards the finish. (MS)
This makes a very aristocratic first impression with its super subtle floral and peachy nose. Then comes the tightly wound palate with quite a firm tannin structure and a slew of minerality. Needs some time to open up, but excellent potential. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.
