The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano has more extract, although it is fresh and youthful, with a fine structure. There is a bit darker fruit but not nearly as extracted as the 2015 or showing the maturity of that wine. It reveals a sweet floral perfume of ripe raspberry and a hint of balsamic, and it is long on the palate, with no signs of weightiness. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Santo Stefano is a potent wine. Dark flavors and oxidative overtones make me think the Riserva is more of a near-term proposition. Ultimately the 2017 feels a bit pushed, and there is no reason to push, as Albesani confers plenty of power on its own. Moreover, the strong oak imprint does not add much, if anything at all.
