Tasting notes
The Rocche Viberti 2016 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione comes from a site in Castiglione Falletto (just like the Bricco Boschis expression also made by this producer) although I think this wine gives a lot more intensity and overall depth. There is a sharp and polished nature to its aromas of wild cherry, rose and spice. However, the aromas are noticeably more lifted and vertical in this bottle.

The 2016 Barolo is sourced from vineyard parcels within Rocche di Castiglione, Bricco Boschis and Mariondino, and was aged for 25 months in 25-hectoliter French oak barrels. Savory and classic aromas of fresh leather, rose petal, dried red plum, and tar lift from the glass. The wine has generous, ripe fruit through the mid-palate, including notes of cedar, dried sour cherry, and baking spice. This warrants some time to harmonize in cellar. Drink 2024-2032. A third-generation winemaker who took over his family estate in 2004, Claudio Viberti has holdings within Castiglione Falletto. In 2014 he began bottling holdings of the cru of Bricco Boschis, which is primarily associated with the wines of Cavollotto, as they have the majority of the MGA’s vineyard.
The 2016 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is absolutely gorgeous. Initially a bit austere, the 2016 opens up beautifully with a bit of air. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, mint, dried herbs, licorice and dried herbs give the 2016 striking layers of dimension. This super-classic, mid-weight Barolo will thrill readers who appreciate traditionally-styled wines. Naturally, the 2016 needs cellaring to be at is best, as the tannins are quite youthful.
