The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is coming into its own, tasted two years later, and remains fresh and pure. Its aromatics are a bit more inward compared to the 2018 at this point, with ripe cherry candy, anise, and cedar. The palate offers sanguine and iron-rich tones, with ripe, present tannins and generous fruit to support it. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2017 Barolo Cerretta stands out in this range for its intensely floral personality and mid-weight structure. Crushed rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, dried leaves and anise lend quite a bit of aromatic nuance. The 2017 is classy and polished today. Even better, it will drink well with minimal cellaring.

The Ettore Germano 2017 Barolo Cerretta shows a shiny ruby color and lots of ambient light. The bouquet is nuanced and detailed, with cassis, dried cranberry, camphor ash and crushed flowers. This wine excels in terms of texture, thanks to that twofold combination of structure and elegant silkiness. This is a sharply chiseled and focused Cerretta release of some 75,000 bottles.

Serralunga d'Alba. 20% whole bunch, or, rather, the bunches were crushed but not destemmed. 40 days on the skins. Aged in a new large oak cask of 25 hl. Youthful mid ruby. Sour-cherry nose with hints of Campari, raspberry and a charming pinch of oak. More tightly-knit than the Prapò of the same vintage. Same tightly knitted sour-cherry fruit on the palate with a layer of finely ground, coating, persistent tannins and sappy acidity. Great balance and style, but not something for immediate consumption. (WS)
